Perfect, pretty solution for hiding/sorting trash in the kitchen

Here's my disclaimer for this post: I'm sharing at the urging of several friends. It's true that pretty much without fail, whenever we have people over, someone discovers our trash basket with lots of excitement and proceeds to make sure everyone in the room has seen it. It's one of those things that is just so simple, but can make a big difference in your everyday life. So, just a few notes about this great little solution…

In San Francisco, we're required to sort garbage/recycle/compost into three separate bins for weekly trash collection. In San Francisco, people often reside in smallish living quarters. This equation can be tricky. A few years ago, I found this basket (at Ross!) - a pretty solution for our kitchen which could not work more perfectly for storing our three trash bags. We use brown grocery bags (which we can easily carry out to the trash bins as needed, and doubled-up for wet compost), and three of them fit snugly side-by-side in the basket. When we have parties, I tack a note above each bag to label them for guests. This has proved to be pretty successful (and most of our friends know the system by now). The basket is actually pretty worn out at this point - it has a liner inside which I wash frequently, but the edges are threadbare in some spots. I'm keeping my eye out for a replacement, as this system works so perfectly for us. I had the below image from a recent photo shoot, so I thought it would be a good time to share, especially with holiday parties happening... it could be that you just need a temporary solution, or want to set up trash receptacles in multiple rooms. Hope this is helpful!
