Do you ever compare fashion to decor? I'm guessing, yes. Maybe you pick up on similar trends in each, or perhaps get inspired by a well-designed room and copy it in an outfit? I know I do! I think about this often with mixing prints. I've noticed that fashion-forward types tend to be bolder (in general) with their style choices when it comes to clothes than they might be in their interiors. If you'll mix a striped scarf with an animal print sweater, why not striped + leopard pillows on the sofa? Just a thought! This past weekend while helping a friend decorate her apartment, we replaced too-short curtains with longer ones. Both she and another friend could hardly believe how much difference it made the ENTIRE room feel. Given they're both very stylish ladies, I was trying to think of the outfit equivalent to the curtains …perhaps a new hair style, or a great jacket?
You've probably heard pretty lighting pieces referred to as the 'jewelry' in a room. And this is often the case! Lighting is often the place we bring in materials such as glass, metal, crystal. The same goes for jewelry. They both bring the pretty, the sparkle, the elegance. I certainly use each element take it up a notch, whether designing a room or an outfit.
One Kings Lane has so many fabulous lighting options at the moment. I had fun taking one of my favorite necklaces as inspiration and finding a few current lighting selections that lend a similar 'feel.' Personally, I love the idea of finding inspiration anywhere and everywhere. It's certainly easy to find overlaps in the way I dress and my interiors. Layers are key. Scarves and dangling beads are ever-present. Mixed, multiple textures=always.
Many folks who come to me wanting help with their interiors have a good sense of their personal style when it comes to fashion. The challenge (a fun one!) for me is to translate this to their home environment. They don't know yet what they want in terms of decor. This isn't because they're not capable of decorating a pretty room, but very often it's just because they haven't spent a lot of time thinking about it, especially as compared to their wardrobe. (We all have to get dressed every day, after all! This has involved a few decisions over the years. :))
I usually wear this necklace with something pretty basic, like jeans and a slouchy tee. My style is pretty casual, and such a fabulous necklace is fancy enough for me on a typical day. Pairing this piece with anything dressier goes 'special occasion' pretty quickly (at least for me).
The same could be said for any of the gorgeous chandeliers I've rounded up here. I love them. They make a statement. I don't want anything in the room to detract from them in any way. They hold their own in the style department. I'd pair them with more casual furnishings, for a relaxed and welcoming space.
How about you? Which fashion--->design or design--->fashion connections or trends have you noticed recently?
p.s. I have to include a disclaimer about the selfies! They are so hilarious to me, as I cannot take myself seriously enough to pull off a decent photo of myself. Anyone who knows me, knows that I will rarely post one. Scrolling through this post just cracks me up…three awkward selfies!! Including the one in the mirror especially keeps things light, and keeps me humble. So natural, right?! I hope they entertain you as well. ;)
